'Legal' Logging also to Blame

Here's something from Jarius Bondoc of Philippine Star. "I once went fishing with two retired Air Force sergeants in what we thought was a quiet, sleepy cove an hour from Baler, Aurora’s capital. From lush treetops a flock of hornbills suddenly took flight in fright. Moments later came the grating whirr of a chainsaw, followed by timber falling one by one, then thick smoke. Whoever it was apparently was burning a path for his booty. My companion couldn’t contain himself and yelled, "You S-O-B, what you’re doing is wrong." Came an unmistakable crack from a rifle and a splash in the water a foot from our boat. We sped back to town to report the incident to authorities. No action; orders from the top most likely to ignore such complaints. Everyday too along Quezon’s coast, one would spot barges tugging floating logs. Again, official inaction."

This incident should be reported to the Office of the President so they will know the places where to catch these culprits. Several years ago, when DZJO-FM Baler came out, a Baleriano Radio Commentator did his best to call the attention of everyone to stop legal and illegal logging in our beloved Province. Except from some active catholic organization, there was no feedback from the public sector. It's not yet too late, young and old, men and women should group themselves and start saving the future. Start it Joseph thru your batangbaler.net.

From a very concerned Balerian

In view of the recent tragic events that happened in Aurora, particularly in Dingalan, I suggest that necessary legal actions should be taken to completely, totally stop logging in the province; prosecute those who are responsible; and rehabilitate the denuded areas, even as concrete, tangible solutions/alternatives must be put in place for those who largely depend on the mountains for their means of living. Otherwise, the recent tragedy would just be the beginning.

As a lawyer who hails from Aurora, I am offering my modest help toward this end. I would hasten to add that a collaboration among Aurora lawyers -- province-based and otherwise -- would be a good idea. Tayo-tayung mga taga-Aurora lamang ang makapagsasalba sa ating kalagayan. Thank you. 09174576646

The incidents have shown the inept and inaction of our govt offcials in Aurora. This has happened before last Dec of 1995,what happened after that???
it has exposed that there is indeed a massive ecological problem in our province.
One thing though i am really concerned about is the 'positive' trait as they say of the Filipinos or Aurorans, which is being resilient.kunbaga, pagtapos ng unos at dahil naakaligtas sa unos eh parerelax na lang uli at kalilimutan na kung bakit "NAGKAUNOS".
WE MUST GET UNITED NOW.Wla ng mangangalaga sa ating bayan kung hindi tayo tayo pa rin.
